VOLVOX: Adagio largamente

You are here: PUBLIC ART COMMISSIONS > Concerto in Three Movements > VOLVOX: Adagio largamente

Volvox is a large spherical sculpture composed of a series of conical steel rods hand welded with a silver metallic powder coat. The work explores both the concentration of energy as you perceive the individual conical forms spiraling into the center of the sphere as well as the release as energy swirls from the center to the surface. In nature, Volvox is a polyphyletic genus of chlorophyte green algae in the family Volvocaceae. It forms spherical colonies of up to 50,000 cells. Volvox diverged from unicellular ancestors approximately 200 million years ago. In 2009, Volvox was the featured artwork for an exhibition of sculptures at the US Botanic Gardens. As the central movement in the Concerto, the directions are that it be played slowly, broad and sustained but vigorous, without changing tempo. The choice of a silver metallic powdercoat emphasizes the difference from the shiny and lively Haiku and Millefiore by a more subdued presence with individual flashes.
