Concerto in Three Movements   CONCERTO IN THREE MOVEMENTS HAIKU: Allegro con audacia VOLVOX: Adagio largamente MILLEFIORE: Rubato scorrevole y venusto   Inova Schar Cancer Institute   Concerto is an installation of three spheres whose vocabulary follows the traditional form of the concerto – a fast movement followed by a slow movement and concluding with a fast movement. Each sphere explores the nature and manifestation of energy in a different manner, using a different vocabulary and grammar. The individual spheres are distinct and open to the imagination as each of the patterns depicts different manifestations of energy and sound. The kinetic quality of the patterns on each of the spheres inspire reflection (the nature of energy, the spirals following photosynthesis, the Fibonacci ratios governing the Fermat spiral, fractals, chaos, and symmetry). They are at the same time elegant, curious, and playful. What evolve are hybrid forms that intersect physics and biology, and that lie somewhere between sculpture, drawing, and musical resonance. This work explores and illuminates not simply the musical nature of each sphere, but the nature of the interrelationship between the spheres in the form of a Concerto. All of the materials in each sphere are unique and specific to my work – the springs are hand formed, the curves of Millefiore are executed in my studio with the end drops welded on, and the rods that form Haiku are cut in my studio to my dimensions. There are up to 3,000 individual welds involved and each sphere takes me between three to five months to complete as there is no template. I work the metal elements individually and may need to completely rework various sections to achieve the final result. Each sphere is hand welded and unique as the pattern evolves during the welding process.
